TIPS FOR FOREIGNERS
IN CHINA

     A.) BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

  • Set up essential accounts while still abroad
  • Download necessary apps before arriving in China
  • Install Chinese payment apps: Alipay or WeChat Pay
  • Download offline maps (Google Maps won’t work reliably)

     B.) COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES

  • WeChat is essential – almost everyone in China uses it for messaging, payments, and social media
  • Email (non-Google accounts) generally works
  • International calls via regular phone service work fine

     C.)FOR STAYING CONNECTED WITH HOME

  • Use international roaming for critical communications
  • Schedule regular check-ins when you have access to unrestricted internet (e.g., during travel outside China)
  • Use email for non-urgent communications

D.)RECOMMENDED APPROACH FOR FILIPINO SPOUSES IN CHINA

As someone married to a Chinese citizen and living in China long-term:

    1. Embrace the Chinese digital ecosystem

  • Master WeChat for all communications
  • Use Chinese apps for daily life

     2. Plan for international access

  • Travel to Hong Kong, Macau, or other countries periodically for unrestricted internet
  • Use international roaming sparingly for essential communications

     3. Stay informed legally

  • Keep updated on internet regulations
  • Consult your embassy for guidance on legal communication methods

     4. Focus on integration

  • Learning to use Chinese platforms will make your life much easier
  • Most daily needs can be met with Chinese apps

"The online world is like different islands, and crossing between them always requires some means."

FINAL NOTE: Many foreigners successfully live in China by adapting to the local digital ecosystem rather than trying to replicate their home country’s internet experience. While it requires adjustment, millions of expatriates manage daily life, work, and communication using China’s legal internet infrastructure.
