ADVICE FOR SOLO TRAVELER
HOLDING TOURIST VISA
Traveling solo on a tourist visa is an incredible experience, but it comes with unique scrutiny.
Immigration officers are trained to spot individuals who might be planning to work illegally or overstay.
And solo travelers can sometimes look more “vulnerable” or “suspicious” than families or groups if not prepared.

MASTER THE "SOLO NARRATIVE"
The most common question a solo traveler faces at border control is: “Why are you traveling alone?”
- THE TRAP – Hesitating or giving a vague answer like “I just wanted to see the world” can sound like you are looking for work.
- THE FIX – Have a specific, confident, and personal reason ready.
- ” I’m a freelance photographer documenting street art in this city for my portfolio.
- ” I’ve always wanted to hike the [Specific Trail] and decided to take a solo retreat to disconnect from work.”
” I’m visiting friends in [City A] for three days, then I want to tour museums in [City B] alone before flying home.”
SAFETY AND CONNECTIVITY (CRUCIAL FOR SOLO'S)
Unlike groups, if something goes wrong, you are on your own.
- SHARE YOUR LIVE LOCATIONS –Use WhatsApp, Google Maps, or Find My Friends to share your live location with a trusted friend or family member back home 24/7.
- OFFLINE MAPS – Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) for your entire route. Solo travelers get lost more often and may not have data immediately upon landing.
- LOCAL SIM/E SIM – Get connected the moment you land. Being unreachable is dangerous for a solo traveler. Purchase a Chinese SIM card in advance and top it up beforehand. SIM cards from China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Mobile are good choices. Buying them at the airport may be very expensive.
SOCIAL PROOF AND EMERGENCY CONTACT
You must have an emergency contact in the country you want to go to, as well as some information that can help you in case you need it, to ensure you are safe.
- LOCAL CONTACT – If you know anyone in the country (even an acquaintance), have their name, address, and phone number written down. Tell the officer, “I plan to meet a friend for coffee on Tuesday,” even if the rest of the trip is solo. It adds legitimacy.
EMBASSY DETAILS – Save the contact information for your country’s embassy or consulate in the destination country in your phone immediately upon arrival.
DRESS AND DEMEANOR
Make yourself more presentable but not too much, simple and also neat, not like a traveler who is planning to stay in another country for too long.
- LOOK LIKE A TOURIST, NOT A DRIFTER – You don’t need a suit, but looking disheveled, carrying excessive backpacking gear that looks like you are moving in permanently, or looking exhausted can raise flags. Dress neatly and confidently.
CONFIDENCE IS KEY – When answering questions, make eye contact and speak clearly. Nervousness is often misinterpreted as guilt.

Final Pro Tip: If you are denied entry, do not argue. Arguing with a border officer as a solo traveler rarely works and can lead to detention. Politely ask for the reason, accept the decision, and arrange your return flight. You can reapply later with stronger documentation that addresses the specific reason for the refusal.
